Go to an empty field or park where there aren't any other people or animals. Teaching the sit command is fairly easy, tell your dog to sit, then place one hand under his jaw and your other hand on his back near the tail bone, gently tilt his head up and push his rear end down, when it is down say sit and show him that you are pleased with him and give him a treat.

If you keep repeating this lesson, your dog will sit when he is told, because he realizes that by carrying out your orders he will be rewarded and also because he can see that you are delighted with his efforts. Eventually your dog will naturally do what you tell him, and you can dispense with the treats.

Puppies are docile, lovable and inquisitive, so it is easy to make friends with them and show them how to behave in a proper manner. You can teach your dog from any age but it is far easier to start when they are pups as an old dog may just not have the incentive to learn.
