A Health And Physical Education Teacher Instructs Her Pupils About The Significance Of Alcoholism Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the largest private high school in the county. Although she had been teaching for only two years, she had already established a reputation as a person with teaching approaches that stimulated and encouraged students to think and to learn.
For instance, one Monday morning she addressed the students in her class and said the following: "For the next two or three days we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a more broad-based standpoint and we are also going to learn about several of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a more specific viewpoint."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely show that a drinker with a drinking problem is an individual who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that a person manifests, the greater the probability that he or she is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then told the class that each student would be responsible for researching two alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the class via a six minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to go over the list and rank the top five alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After approximately five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told the students in her class that after she assesses the numbers, she will present her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson told her students to look over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, concerns, or issues. Within 30 or 40 seconds, virtually every pupil in the class raised his or her hand. It was apparent that the students had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For instance, almost every person in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, namely, "Do you feel extremely ill when you stop drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told her students why this answer was the most straightforward indicator of alcohol dependency. She pointed out that the key difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.
Basically this means that when an individual who is addicted to alcohol suddenly stops drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to grasp the fundamental difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the excitement exhibited by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had motivated and encouraged the students in her class to stop and think about an important health issue and social problem that exists in our society.
